Yes it’s true that celebrities and their families are attractive targets for kidnappers, extortionists, terrorists and criminal assailants.

And it is also true that awareness, appreciation, and the application of good security practices at home, at work, and while traveling, can greatly reduce the odds of a successful attack on your family and yourself!

And I understand that some celebrities do not want to surround themselves with security. But packing your own “heat” might bring you more trouble than it’s worth.

LOS ANGELES — For effective celebrity security, brains are better than brawn.

After guards working for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt scuffled with photographers in India twice in the past week, security experts said thuggish bodyguards who rely on football-player physiques and tough-guy attitudes might cause more problems than they solve.

“The only time physical involvement becomes necessary is when we or the client is in fear for their lives,” says Aaron Cohen of IMS Security in Los Angeles, which provides protection for celebrities and their homes. “That’s the only time it’s justified legally and that’s the only time it’s justified professionally.”

That doesn’t make it easy to stay cool when faced with overzealous fans and photographers, says David Marks, a “professional protection specialist” in Beverly Hills for more than 20 years. (The term “bodyguard” fell out of fashion decades ago, he says.)
