Insider Tips: Career Advice from Top Professionals

WARDROBE: You will want to own at least two suits. When shopping for suits, the jacket shoulders should fit smooth, with no “hump” below the collar, and the length should be such that when you stand at attention, the end of the jacket falls between your thumb tip and the first joint. I suggest that you buy your suits off the rack, (in a department store) but then take them to a tailor to be fitted in the waist and sleeves. Have them tailored for a good fit without gun or gear, while the coat is buttoned. That way, if wearing the suit unarmed for a business meeting, it will look right. When working armed, always leave the coat unbuttoned, which leaves just enough slack so the weapon cannot be seen.

Wearing a sidearm and gear every day is really hard on your clothes, both the waistband of the pants and the jacket lining take a beating. The lower back part gets bunched up sitting in the car, since you have to leave the jacket on over your gear. A good tailor makes all the difference in the world, especially if you’re built in such a manner that your suits and shirts need major work to fit right. They are finally making good-quality separates that save on tailoring, and that might be an option. However, having a great tailor means I can grab a great suit on sale at a discount place, and know he’ll make it right.

SHOES:  You will want a good, quality pair of men’s dress shoes that are very comfortable, as you usually are spending long hours on your feet.  Look for quality leather that is hand-stitched, these can be found in the Men’s department of the high-end department stores. Like any footwear, your dress shoes need to fit properly. Wear them out several times before your assignment in order to break them in. Be sure to wear the appropriate socks when trying the shoes on, before purchasing. They need to be polished and maintained. Shoes are a small detail, but an important one. Dress shoes can be a little slippery on wet surfaces, but this is easily remedied by a little grip tape on the sole and at the toe, if it is a problem. Keep in mind that if it is too rough, then you will mar the finish on some waxed and polished surfaces or wood.
The more you wear hard-soled dress shoes, the more your feet will become accustomed to them. If the sole really bothers you, a shoe repair store can put in some sort of an insert (rubber or gel.) It is preferable for you to look and dress like the people you are accompanying, and that means proper dress shoes regardless of comfort. Spend the money on your shoes–it is worth it! Black is usually the best bet, as they will go with dark suits.

What You Should Know When Looking for Personal Protection

By Henrik Bramsborg

As a former personal protection operative and present business/career coach, I have had the opportunity to be on both sides of the fence, so to speak, in regards to being hired as- and hiring personal protection.

Any executive or other businessmen looking for a protection should take certain things into consideration, unknown to most people.

A. If a bodyguard is needed in a certain area, so is local knowledge. Do not fall into the trap of solely hiring someone from your own backyard, if you are going to a foreign country. Hire a local security specialist to assist your own security on site. Language, geography and culture can be vital.

B. Having a single certificate from a so-called bodyguard organization or bodyguard school does NOT make a specialist – no matter the school reputation. Background schooling, military experience (or other “hard” professions), past jobs and cognitive capacity all add to the equation. The same goes with other occupations. Former special forces is NOT spelled b.o.d.y.g.u.a.r.d., neither is police, CIA or FBI.

C. Anyone claiming to be a bodyguard should be able to arrange logistics, do a research based risk assessment, know first aid w. CPR, handle weapons and hand-to-hand combat and educate their clients on the same subjects. The list goes on, depending on clients work environment.
