Very good article - this is a problem that is all too common when traveling oversees and depending on local support. This can happen even when you have assigned an agent in the lead patrol unit. Your decision was a good choice.

I share the comments above, I hated Moscow, cold wet and inhospitable, and thats just the staff at the stations.! My story is along similar lines held up in that well known Moscow Traffic. The lead Police Car in our short motorcade did use his lights and horns etc and when they failed to clear a path they used the loudspeaker, however to re-enforce the issue the front seat Police passenger leaned out of the window and started to beat any obstacle be it a car, truck, bus or pedestrian with his nightstick!! The comedy aspects were great, the downside was this caused passers by to give more attention to our "Low Profile" move that was really necessary. The outcome..? 23 assorted vehicles dented, one fellow officer kneecapped who was on traffic point duty, the Principle laughed so much she pee...ed herself but we made the wheels up at Sheremetyevo Airport.!

Nice story? Typical error guests Russia, especially security. Do you think that the tricky maneuvers will help in solving problems. The main risk to you was not attacking the demonstrators. The most dangerous was late to the airport. And without a police car in front of the escort, the danger was more real. In Moscow now, the terrible traffic jams.

Very good story, nice operative thinking. Good reading. For all VP, VIP, movie stars or celebreties why don't you guys use agents, PPS or Bodyguards who work for the Bureaus, or government agencies . Also it is a good idea to use agents with the same ethnical back grounds such as countries you visit. Russia for example.
