My good friend and training partner, Mark “Six” James, whom I’ve given the new nickname “Eli” due to the vast array of weapons he is proficient at, is on point again in Balancing Your Attack”. Far too many people especially those working law enforcement, security and EP fields carry their knives and other back-up weapons on their strong side near their firearm. So what does this mean? Simply this; if the bad guy can’t get to your firearm, you’ve given him the option to cut you throat with your own knife! Certainly, having your pack-up weapon well hidden / concealed on the opposite or weak side as well as other places on your body, can give you an advantage and increase your chances of survival. Once again “Eli” great food for thought!

I alternate carrying my folder between my strong and “weaker” side. My decision to do so is dictated by what I’m wearing, where I’m going, and what I’m doing. But, regardless of my activities, I’m comfortable and confident in doing so only because I’m proficient in several disarm counter measures which allow me to, if need be, work “intensively” from my strong side. But for anyone lacking such defensive capabilities, I strongly recommend your instruction on the subject. Thank you for helping to keep our community better informed and, ultimately, safer.

I am a big fan of maintaining the element of surprise on your side. If my firearm is concealed so is my knife or other countermeasures. If a potential aggressor sees a knife in your pocket you may make them increase the intensity of their attack or threat, as they see your tools. A potential thief may ask you for your money and not display a weapon, allowing you to feign compliance and then handle your business. If they see your knife, they may go straight to a firearm as they demand money or other valuable from you or your client. Try not to advertise your options.

Great video—I agree that we seem to see too many blades carried on the strong side. Often, I see them carried in the back pocket of 5-11′s where they can be snatched quickly in a dense crowd. Great advice!!
