Sponsored by ESI Alumni Association
Las Vegas, Nevada
August 6-8, 2010

It’s going to be another great conference! The Association Board of Directors has worked hard to put together the presentations and workshops that have been the hallmark of our conferences. Past Keynote Speakers included renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Park Dietz – John Wiseman, author of the Rogue Warriors series – and Tom Taylor of Gavin de Becker & Associates.
In 2010 our Keynote Speaker is Caesar’s Palace Hotel
Tony Scotti of the Vehicle Dynamics Institute. Scotti, who began teaching defensive driving and executive protection
for major U.S. corporate clients in the 1970’s is a legend in the industry. Who Attends the Conference? If you have never attended one of our Annual Conferences – why?

The price is right, the place is great, the workshops are in-depth and unique, and you get a chance to network with other graduates, students, and instructors. Our conference is open to all, including professionals throughout the protection industry.
We believe networking is enhanced through association with other highly qualified agents.

Past attendees have included professionals who trained with EPI, Oatman, Ronin, and others. We work with these associates in the field and like to share with and learn from them. We welcome interested non-members and members of like-minded associations to attend, so help us reach those highly qualified professional members of our industry who would gain from attending our conference.

ESI students find it valuable in their ability to fast-track their networking capability. It’s great to meet and talk with graduates who have “been there – done that.” If you are a newcomer to the field – or an experienced professional looking for new opportunities – or interested in the conference networking opportunities, this is a “must” event.

Many regard the NETWORK event held on Saturday, which provides a chance to learn about jobs and the industry companies that provide jobs, to be the most important part of the conference.

Itinerary
Friday, August 6, 2010
the various companies who hire protection and investigation specialists.

Saturday Afternoon Round Tables
2:45-3:35 INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL with Jared Van Driessche of Gavin de Becker & Associates, Chuck Mauldin the Manager of Security for Wal-Mart, and Zelos Willis formerly of Copeland Christian Ministries. These ESI graduates have hundreds of
Sanity. Barry speaks from painful experience, with Anlance having negotiated and liquidated $175,000 in debt, while increasing profitability from 2.7% in 2008 to 7.3% in 2009.

4:35-5:25 RESUME WRITING – with George Tzelios, David Nichter, and Chuck Mauldin.

For the last few years, Black Ice has provided volunteer support for the GI Film Festival here in Washington DC. The festival is next week and we generally support three evening Red Carpet events with about 10 people each night.

There are usually several celebrities in attendance, producers, directors, and so forth. Our role is to provide an unarmed presence and we are there to assist attendees in moving around the facility, to provide assistance at the entrances and to be there in an emergency.

Historically, we have had a mixture of new Executive Protection agents that are looking for some experience as well as some well trained and experienced personnel that wish to give of their time and talent to this event that is supporting the troops, and celebrating the military.

Both experienced and non-experienced EP trained personnel are welcome – the pay is the same for all… nada. However, Black Ice will provide a letter of appreciation, a resume bullet you can use for future work, and the opportunity to work with and get to know others in the local EP industry.

NOTE: You must be a graduate of a state recognized EP/PPS training course and/or an experienced EP agent. All applicants will be screened and selected for this event based on your background (some experienced some not experienced). You must have suitable dress attire.

While we have had folks drive in from as far away as Chicago, this is mostly an event for local DC Metro people as there are no travel funds. Should you desire to travel to this area to participate you may choose to commute from a local hotel, there are several within 10 miles of DC that are under $100 for double bed rooms. Some suggestions are at the end of the message.

The days we need to cover are: Thursday the 13th, Friday the 14th, and Saturday the 15th from about 2PM to as late as 2AM. If you do not or cannot pull and entire 12 hour shift, you can state what hours you would be available (new people I recommend putting in as many hours as you can as these kinds of hours are realistic and common as anyone will tell you). If you can only come in for a few hours that is OK as it may help a lot at certain times.

Normally we have a longer lead time and this year was no exception, however our normal resources were unexpectedly – unavailable. So I am opening this event up to my extended group as we need the support.

Here is what we need from each volunteer participant if possible:

Send to Black Ice:

A brief one paragraph bio. (include if you served in the military yourself, or perhaps a close relative if you wish) my example is below – brief is good.

A head and shoulders photo in a suit or equivalent for females.

A copy of your PPS credentials or something that shows where you have gone to school – references if you cannot provide this.

What is your availability between May 13 and May 15th, including hours available to work. (Minimum 4 hours)

I need your experience level – if you have not worked much – just tell me… we need both experienced and in-experienced (must be trained and qualified) personnel. This event will help give that experience.

Pay – voluntary support – no pay, whenever possible a meal (normally pizza) will be provided by the host and drinks are usually available (it is wise to have to bring a snack just in case). Each participant will be provided a resume bullet blurb to use, and a letter of appreciation from Black Ice.

All personnel will be required to wear a sports jacket, slacks, shirt and tie (minimum), a dark suit would be preferable, with female equivalent style attire.

I need a response by Tuesday the 11th so we can make assignments and a schedule. The sooner the better for these assignments. You can volunteer for more than one event, some in the past have worked all three events.

If selected, you will be contacted and given further instructions.

Thank you all, I look forward to meeting and working with you.

Steven

Send replies to:

The proliferation of executive protection training schools that have sprung up across the country and the globe create both an opportunity and a challenge. On the one hand, there are plenty to choose from and, on the other hand, it takes a degree of insight and investigation to separate those schools that are worthy of your investment from those bent on wasting your time and money.Newcomers to the industry can typically spend upwards of $1,000 to $3,000 or more in attending “basic” training courses before they realize whether or not the profession is something that they wish to further pursue. Bodyguard Careers offers a one day course costing only $250 that allows students to make an informed decision earlier and at a far less cost.

The objectives of this course are to provide executive protection trainees with a thorough insight into the realm of executive protection and to provide an overview of the skill sets required in order to pursue a career as a professional bodyguard.

This unique, low-cost course allows students to make a more educated decision on whether or not they should make the costly financial and time consuming investment into following a career in which they may later find does not suit them well.

The Seminar is eight hours and is conducted by seasoned professionals with real-life experience and expertise in the field of executive protection.

Working as an Executive Protection Specialist can be a rewarding career if you have the drive, the motivation, and the willingness to learn. With appropriate training and tools you can enhance your opportunities to excel in this elite field.

If you would like more information on the Introduction to Executive Protection Seminar, please sign up for a session below.

You may have noticed over the past few days that it has been exceptionally difficult recently to access Bodyguard Careers. You’re not alone; many visitors and Bodyguard Careers staff have had the same experience as well.

First of all, the bad news: Due to an unfortunate series of events, the site had intermittent connectivity problems from Saturday through Tuesday of this week. I was traveling during much of this time (in Iowa of all places, without a computer or Internet) and as a result, I wasn’t able to get the site back up in a timely manner.

We got so much traffic to the site in such a short period of time on Saturday that it nearly killed the server that hosted Bodyguard Careers. When we chose originally chose our host for this site, we never imagined that we would get so much traffic and that crashing would be a possibility.

Unfortunately, we had to learn the hard way that this was a certain reality, and that we needed to move the site to a more stable hosting infrastructure. Once this realization set in, two more days were spent making this transition to a new host, and all of the quirks that go along with such a major site change. Fortunately, as of the time I write this, we feel that the site should be on much stronger footing.

The experience was embarrassing for both myself and Hucky because having a down website in the year 2009 seems highly unprofessional. It also prevented many new visitors from making it to our site who wanted to see what it was all about. During the downtime of the site, we experienced a sense of helplessness that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

Now, for the good news. With the explanation of what happened out of the way, I think it’s worth mentioning why the server crashed in the first place. It actually crashed for good reason. Starting on Saturday, the national broadcast on Fox News had a story profiling Female Bodyguards and how there has recently become a surging demand for female bodyguards. In that story, our very own Hucky Austin was a featured interviewee! Even better, in his by-line, it showed the URL for our site underneath his name… a compelling call to action for people to come visit our site.

And they came and they visited! Within an hour we had a 20x increase in traffic over a normal Saturday. Within two hours, we were setting all time weekend traffic records. Then the third hour came, and the site came crashing down.

Unfortunately, while we were trying to get the site back up, the story kept running. In fact, it ran the entire weekend and was seen by millions of Fox News visitors… all while the site was down.

We were able to get the site back up temporarily on Sunday afternoon, and we actually had a very successful day on Monday… until the site went back down again. On Tuesday, it was up/down/up/down/up/down/up all day.

Finally on Wednesday everything seems to be running stable. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this won’t ever happen again.

Thanks for sticking with us – we love our readers and your loyalty has really helped us stay focused on this labor of love. We couldn’t do it without you!

Look for Hucky on your national and local news outlets… I have a feeling this isn’t the last you will be hearing of him. Hopefully the site won’t break next time.

- Jeff
