You’ve got your first bodyguard assignment, congratulations. Now its time to use calm judgment and plan out the assignment with a focused mind so you can prepare properly. The more you plan ahead, the better possibility for success. The overall objective of executive protection (EP) in the real world is to create a secure environment conducive to the business activities being carried out by the client within a particular area.

Main Objectives

Your main objectives should include: preventing and addressing security threats that affect the client’s well-being, prioritizing core EP needs, identifying, assessing and controlling risks. This is accomplished by categorizing threats for risk management planning and execution of the EP operations. If threat groups are operating in the area:

• Identify your enemy.

• Their method of operation – likely techniques and tactics that may be used.

• Their overall professionalism – are they sophisticated or armature’s.

• Their recent Attacks – and possible pre-incident indicators.

• Minimize these threats by advance work to develop a plan to avoid them.

• Employ basic EP measures to deter and mitigate the threats.

• Establish the appropriate EP plan, security controls and need to know procedures.

Challenges and Approaches

Randomly changing routes and times may be difficult. However, remain as unpredictable as possible to confuse potential hostel surveillance attempts, keeping the client from becoming what is commonly known as a “soft target”. Keeping alert for suspicious activity, anything abnormal, or out of place and being extra wary. Don’t become complacent.

Managing EP Expenditures

During your advance work document potential risks and forward it to the corporate budgeting personnel for the assignment to justify any increased EP or security requirements or anticipated additional costs for increase client protection. It is your job to adequately protect the client regardless of corporate budget restraints.

Achieving Mission Assurance

EP team members should dress and behave in a manner consistent with local customs within the area of operation. Remaining calm at all times, maintain a temper of iron on assignment. Working under a cloak of anonymity and invisibility – there is safety in not drawing attention to the client. Your EP team should preserve its anonymity, camouflaging the nature of the job and blending in with the clients surrounding environment. The security of the client is badly damaged when the presence of the EP team is obvious and noticeable to the public.

Establish points of contact and maintain liaison with local law enforcement and conduct regular liaison visits with the director of security at the client hotel. Keep your television tuned to CNN and the local news channel, as local information is of critical importance on EP assignments, providing early warning on potential threats.

When on advance work at the client hotel, note all escape routes. Know the locations of fire escapes, and emergency exits that may be utilized in an emergency for successful client evacuation. Always err on the side of caution. Your main goal is to be prepared so nothing goes wrong.

Key Lessons

If any setbacks or mistakes occur on your first assignment, be ruthless on yourself to not repeat the same mistakes; however don’t waste time thinking about it or dwelling upon it, just keep moving ahead. Keep safe and God speed.

Professional Bodyguards: Learn, Lead, and Pass-On

By Doc Rogers

Every year new bodyguards enter the industry wanting to make a difference. They have special plans that will allegedly aid the bodyguard industry as a whole and protect clients better. Although their approach do have their merits, there are three important factors that are often over looked: learn, lead, and pass-on.

If you ever questioned what can be achieved with smart bodyguard training, professional experience and hard work, just ask Harlan “Hucky” Austin, Bruce Alexander, Jerry Heying, Elijah Shaw, Mark “Six” James, Joe LaSorsa and Rick Colliver, as well as the other esteemed members of the Bodyguard Industry.

Learn. When it comes to training, only the best bodyguard training will do. The training you receive could be responsible for breaking you out of bodyguard obscurity and make you a full-fledged professional. Throughout your career demonstrate continuous improvement with each bodyguard assignment. Don’t take the easy road, dramatically improve your performance with each consecutive detail. Be consistent, produce tangible results, become a proven bodyguard workhorse and gain hard-won experience.

Lead. Leadership is the influence you have on the bodyguard team. Harness the power of leadership early in your bodyguard career. Lead from the front; work you butt off on bodyguard assignments, this is what will separate you from the wanna-be bodyguards. If this job was easy we’d all be out of work. Undoubtedly through your hard-work and dedication you will become noticed and your fellow bodyguards on the team will respect your influence and they will step-up their respective duties on the detail. Remember, leadership takes total commitment, it is the unrelenting pursuit of client protection. Do this and your leadership will become clearly evident.

Pass-on. Welcome aboard. It’s time to pass-on what you have learned throughout your prestigious career. Pass-on your bodyguard strength and experience to those coming up in the industry. Teach them the mental edge and the laser-like focus needed to become an exceptional professional bodyguard. Show them how to work both harder and smarter on bodyguard assignments. Guide them in the ways of mind, body, and honor. Above all, teach them about teamwork, for that it is in teamwork the client will be best protected. Passing on what you have learned to the up-and-coming lions and lionesses in the bodyguard industry builds upon it’s legacy and professionalism. Always be safe and God speed.

I came across a very interesting article over the weekend. It’s entitled “Can an Executive Protector Really Prevent an Assassination”? It was posted by John D. Byrnes, here’s a snippet from the article.

In famed author, Gavin de Becker’s well researched book “Just 2 Seconds,” he chronicles the seconds between an assassin’s “Moment of Commitment” and the Executive Protector’s “Moment of Recognition” and the resulting ability of that Protector to save their client from assassination.

His research is explicit; if the protector is 15 feet away from the assassin he has only an 18% chance of protecting his client. If he is 7 feet away from the assassin he has only a 45% chance of protecting his client. Only when he is within-an-arms-length from this assailant and he is completely “in the now”, can he offer a 98% chance of protection. If his mind is at all distracted, his percentages drop like a rock!

By Matt Stiehm Ed.D

In life what is a piece of paper worth? Well a piece of paper is worth as much as it can provide for you at any given time. For example a small piece of green paper, with a dead president on it can buy or provide a lot of things. However this is nominal compared to other pieces of paper.

Another example of a good piece of paper to have is the “right” certifications from the “right” training companies or programs. These documents (pieces of paper) demonstrate a certain level of technical and professional competencies. With the “right” piece of paper you can take your career to larger plateaus.

But what about a formal degree: whether the degree is a two year, four year, masters or doctorate degree. What is the return on investment from getting these degrees and most importantly how they can help in your career?

• Two year degree- This is a general degree which in most cases will provide you with some basic skills. The skills generally deal with “readin, ritin and rithmetic”. These skills will provide a solid foundation for going forward in higher education. There is nothing wrong with ending at this level. As professional experience is sometimes more important than what letter grade you got in math.

• Four year degree- This degree will provide more liberal education, or technical education (depending on degree granting institution). The liberal education will provide and hone your skills of writing, researching and understanding human behaviors. If the degrees come from the technical side, you will able to better understand the nuts and bolts of the industry.

• Masters degree- first and foremost not all masters are created equally, if you were looking to expand your business operations and understand an MBA might be best suited for you, if you were looking just for leadership, or some psychological training to help with threat assessments, an organizational leadership or psychological or forensic masters might be what you should look into.

• Doctorate- this level provides for you to be recognized by most communities as a subject matter expert in the selected field of study. Your profession might recognize you as one of the best, but others might not.

• Other pieces of paper-EMT certifications, police training certificates, first responder and the like will enhance your marketability.

All of these pieces of paper demonstrate that you have the commitment and follow through, and willingness to go forward. Going forward, I will talk about different deliver methods (online/on ground) and tell you how to research your higher education schools. There is good and bad about everthing.

If there is anything that I can do, don’t hesitate to send me an email at matt@bodyguardcareers.com

By Doc Rogers

The first step to improving your bodyguard business starts with reviewing your goals. All successful businesspeople have goals in place and work hard in achieving the goals set each day. Start evaluating your bodyguard business today; what do you want your bodyguard business to look like in one year, five years or more down the road?

If you are an up and coming bodyguard your goal may be to lead at team of tier one bodyguard personnel on overseas assignments or if you are a seasoned professional you may want to start managing teams of tier one bodyguards around the world and function as a channel of communication between your clients and your detail leaders in the field. Consider the goals you want to accomplish and know what it will take to get there.

The second step for improving your bodyguard business is start thinking more clearly about how to grow your bodyguard business in the long term. Building strategic business relationships with other bodyguard professionals and meeting new people is the key. To do this you must start attending bodyguard events, executive protection training programs and seminars.

Step back and look at the professional relationships you want to assemble in the industry and how these relationships with be mutually beneficial for building a bodyguard network, increasing business and customer service. This way you can supply your clients’ with additional services that your competitors don’t offer and within multiple international locations.

Begin looking carefully at your bodyguard career goals, restructure and reorganize your activities and pay more attention to the strategic business relationships that you are building.

Finally, start having a total commitment to your bodyguard career success, for taking positive action, for winning, and conquering difficulties, no matter what they are. Make it work. Good luck and God speed.

The following are some strict and serious “must have qualities” for all bodyguards; failure to have these values may result in some serious difficulties.

Job knowledge – Being a master of the bodyguard basics is a must in carrying out your protective duties. Having a simple but effective plan in place to meet every foreseeable emergency on bodyguard details is vital. If you are the Detail Leader it is your responsibility to ensure that all bodyguards, security drivers and physical security personnel under your command are able to perform routine and emergency duties competently and efficiently.

Situational awareness – Always watching for signs of suspicious behavior; people that do not fit into the surroundings. No one behavior is proof that someone is planning to carry out an attack against your client, however keep alert for people who are nervously glancing at your client, displaying signs of mental distress, constantly watch facial expressions, body language and most importantly for signs that a person might be carrying a weapon. Keep 360-degree surveillance around your client.

Your eyes roaming back and forth, looking for potential trouble. Always trust your instincts and evacuate your client to a safe place. This also includes situational awareness for other emergencies such as fires, explosions, and civil disturbances.

Integrity/Honesty – Bodyguards must take on the role with integrity and honesty, and be committed to doing the right thing.

Dependability/Trustworthiness – Always be available, be depended upon, reliable and worthy of the bodyguard trust. Without dependability and trustworthiness we are nothing but thugs in tailored suits.

Ability to Work without Supervision – As bodyguards we must be able to work without a supervisor overseeing or directing our work and behavior on the job. As bodyguards we ensure our own productivity, morale, and advance work with minimum supervision from the Detail Leader.

Good Judgment – Comes from your training and experience; always make the best decision possible based on the circumstances.

Communication skills – Bodyguards must exercise good interpersonal communication skills when carrying out their duties. Having the ability to communicate in a clear, understandable manner is vitally important in providing protection to your client.

Common Sense – Common sense is not so common these days; but in the bodyguard business it is not optional. Each and everyday as a bodyguard use good sense.

Self-confidence – Critical in our business, not the feeling of superiority, no swagger or arrogance, just knowing that you are doing everything possible to protect your client, that’s real self-confidence.

Enthusiasm – This is something you can’t fake; it’s the force that sparks the flame in our bodyguard careers. Without enthusiasm we don’t have a bodyguard career, only a job.

Team Player – To ensure an alert and efficient bodyguard detail, bodyguards must be team players. To earn the respect and cooperation of the other bodyguards on the team, we must be professional in our conduct and ensure we are watching each others back at all times.

A bodyguard detail is only as strong as its weakest member, so it is essential to be a team player and assist your teammates on the job and while conducting bodyguard training exercises. Never violate any of these important tents and you’ll have a great bodyguard career a head of you. Keep safe and God speed.

The year 2010 was a slow year for some sectors of the bodyguard industry. However, be thankful for any hardships you may have experienced. These types of circumstances mold you into well-accomplished bodyguard, one who is relentless, never gives up and becomes victorious. Gain knowledge from life’s hard lesson and keep moving forward.

Last year made us all get out of our comfort zones, find new physical, emotional, and mental strength to work through some economic difficulties. The difference between an extraordinary bodyguard and ordinary one is that little “extra” we gained from experiencing hardships and not letting obstacles get us down; we focused on how to overcome them.

It’s now 2011 and you need to step-it-up even more for your career growth. Start challenging yourself to be more aware of bodyguard career opportunities, because they are out there. Get rid of any negativity, its time to start fresh, learn from last years difficulties, overcome this year’s new challenge and advance forward.

Embrace the New Year; engage and create the bodyguard career success that you have previously dreamed about. But remember, this article is not about New Year’s resolutions (that may have already been broken). It’s about consistently and actively achieving a higher level of success in the bodyguard industry by taking smooth, flowing, decisive daily action and stopping any self-destructive thoughts. Have complete faith in yourself.

There is no straight and easy road to bodyguard career success; it takes a lot of work and planning. Here are some questions to help you towards your career success:

• What bodyguard projects do you want to take on (corporate, entertainment, sports, etc.)? Think about these potential bodyguard projects in detail.

• Where do you want to work as a bodyguard (London, Hong Kong, New York, Mumbai, etc.)? Think about the location in detail.

Now comes the tough part; you are clear about what you want in your bodyguard career, now you’ll have to figure out how to get it. Building your bodyguard career is about action. Bodyguard projects do you want:

Corporate – Research various multinational corporations and find out about their top senior executives. Learn the proper methods of corporate executive protection from a trusted name in the business. Attend a public corporate event that a senior executive will be speaking at and watch the executive protection agents. Send your resume by overnight delivery to the corporate executive protection unit with a cover letter asking for possible future consideration as an employee EP agent or prime vendor. Now do this with 50 more multinational corporations.

Entertainment – Research movie stars who have full-time bodyguards or residential security agents. Find out who is in charge of the bodyguard detail or residential security unit. Send your résumé by overnight delivery with a cover letter asking for possible future consideration as an employee résumés bodyguard/residential security agent or prime vendor. Again send 50 more to various entertainment bodyguard prospects.

Sports – Research start athletes or teams who have full-time bodyguards or residential security agents. Find out who is in charge of the bodyguard detail or residential security unit. Send your résumé by overnight delivery with a cover letter asking for possible future consideration as an employee bodyguard/residential security agent or prime vendor. Send 50 more résumés to star athlete or team bodyguard prospects.

Follow up telephone calls and emails are essential to landing a bodyguard jobs within one of the three categories mentioned above. Through the bodyguard training you receive your prospective employers or clients will not see you are an expense, but as an asset. Be unique and spell out the benefits in hiring you as a bodyguard. To make yourself distinct make sure your training specializes in corporate, entertainment or sport bodyguard services.

Where do you want to work as a bodyguard? Take for instance you want to work in the Philippines as a corporate bodyguard because of the excitement, corruption and violence. First research the country and know it from every angle. If you never been their before, who is going to hire you? Find out if they have any bodyguard training courses in-country. Save some funds, visit the country; maybe do some bodyguard training while you are there to make contacts. If you know what you want and why you want it you’ll achieve bodyguard career success in 2011. Make it work. Keep safe and God speed.

By Doc Rogers

As bodyguards we attend ceremonies and social events this article provides basic guidance on protocol matters. Bodyguards who know proper protocol can provide better protective coverage to their clients and feel more comfortable within the environment no matter the type of forum they are attending.

First rule of business, prior to the function during your advance phase you should make contact with the event’s protocol manger and inspect the venue. Ask the protocol manger any questions you are not sure of (attire, parking arrangements, formal seating plans, foreign dignitaries in attendance, other bodyguard personnel attending the function, etc.).

While bodyguarding your client at ceremonies and social events to be successful and blend into the surrounding you need a combination of set rules to include courtesy, rules of etiquette and common sense. Many high-level clients attend official luncheons or dinners, usually given in honor of a politician (senator, mayor, congressman, etc.). Second rule of business make sure you bring you and your client’s official invitations, this is critical or you don’t get into the function. Normally your client should receive the invitations about three weeks prior to a gathering.

Third rule of business know what to wear. Most official invitations will include a written dress specification of either “informal” or “formal”. The definition of informal means casual dress; open collars and sport shirts for male bodyguards and casual dress, slacks, blouse or skirts for female bodyguards. The definition of formal attire for male bodyguards means black tie or tuxedo and female bodyguards usually should wear an evening or cocktail dress.

Upon entering the ceremony or social event you and your client will be given a name tag and a “YASA” (you are seated at) and will be seated at a table with pre-set place cards and a specific seats. Fourth rule of business sit in your designated seat. Another important rule; get acquainted with the table setting beforehand.

Your table may include the following silverware: a teaspoon, place knife, place fork, salad and dessert fork, a butter knife, a soup spoon, a cocktail or seafood fork, demitasse spoon, iced beverage spoon and steak knife (most bodyguards are only intimately familiar with the steak knife). There will also be serving dishes and various sized plates for different purposes.

If you don’t know which utensil or plate to use, carefully observe what the other guests doing. Fifth rule of business never start eating until each person at the table have been served and the hostess begins. While eating always use your best dining etiquette and do not:

• Place your elbows on the table.
• Squash or mix your food on the plate.
• Soak your bread into gravy or sauces.
• Place napkin on the table (place it on your chair).

During these ceremonies and social events alcohol (wine and champagne) is free flowing and there may be a number of toasts in honor of various dignitaries and special guests before, during and after the meal. Bodyguards on duty never consume alcohol of course, while performing their official duties. If participating in toasts bodyguards should toast with wine and only touch the glass to their lips. However, generally it’s best not to get involved with toasting if possible.

Normally after the meal bodyguards quietly take a position on the sidelines within close proximity to the client’s table without drawing attention. By following these basic protocol guidelines you’ll make a good impression at ceremonies and social events while bodyguarding your client in a low-profile but first-rate manner. Keep safe and God speed.

Two of the most important ingredients in your Executive Protection (EP) career (other than training) are mental preparation and attitude. Be positive and sure of yourself, a positive mind will help you succeed in the EP industry.

This is why it is so important to reinforce positive, performance thinking during your Executive Protection career development. Remain focused and positive; write a list of your EP goals in a journal everyday. This provides you with an overview of your goal structure.

We all slip up sometimes; break any bad habits you may have acquired and channel that energy into your EP goals; when you discipline yourself, you become in total control of your activities. Discipline combined with good habits gives you the groundwork for long term EP success. By linking discipline with your habits, you will have the components that very few people have in EP industry.

Make the choice to go beyond what you think you are capable of and you’ll accomplish much towards your EP career goals. Keep positive in the pursuit of your EP goals and keep working towards them no matter what. Have the mindset that EP is why you were put on the face of the earth and eliminate all negative thinking and self-talk.

Perseverance is the key to becoming a consistent goal achiever and for turning your goals into action, so never give up. The EP action you take today, you will harvest tomorrow, so ramp up and push your EP goals into motion with positive performance thinking. Keep safe and God speed.

You have secured an interview for a Bodyguard position, now is time to start preparing. With good planning and groundwork you will pass the first screening interview stage and move on to the second round of interviews in securing your Bodyguard job. Here are some good ways to properly prepare:

Conduct a Recon

Find out as much as you can about the company. Identify its main executives (CEO, presidents, vice presidents, etc.) products or services. Conduct a detailed examination of any security threats it may have had experienced in the past (product tampering, kidnapping, employee violence, etc.). Check out the company’s website and find out which countries the company operates in as well as other related information.

Continue your recon on the company’s background, slogan, principles and mission statement. Identify what the company has accomplished and what it is striving to accomplish in the future. This reconnaissance will give you the company’s big picture and will communicate to the interviewer you have a clear and present interest in the company.

Craft Your Career Statement

Craft a career statement; this is a 15-second outline of your favorable skills, knowledge and understanding of the Bodyguard position. Here’s an example:

“I shall carry out my Bodyguard duties with professionalism, centered on the concept of serving my principal, and in the interest of (insert company name). I shall always strive to excel in my vital role of keeping the principal safe according to the highest standards of professional and personal conduct that is true and consistent with the reputation of (insert company name).”

By constructing a career statement before the interview you will have an advantage over the other candidates applying for the position. Be ready to answer the customary job interview questions in the interview first round, these may include:

• Tell us about yourself and your background.

• What type of a Bodyguard will you be for (insert company name)?

• What are your strengths and weaknesses?
