MOSCOW, Sept. 13 Madonna performed for 50,000 Moscow fans while an unprecedented 7,000 police and 45 dog handlers were on duty especially for her concert, Novosti said.
Firemen, rescuers, ambulances, mounted police and two helicopters were standing by if needed, Itar-Tass reported.
The concert at Luzhniki Stadium had been delayed until Tuesday night to avoid taking place on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States.
The 48-year-old pop star has been dogged by religious groups during performances across Europe because she seems to hang from a giant cross studded with mirrors during one song, which Orthodox groups consider blasphemous.
Moscow police detained 10 followers of Orthodox organizations that protested the show, city police deputy spokesman Yevgeny Gildeyev told Itar-Tass.
Members of the Union of Orthodox Gonfaloniers also tried to picket, but were stopped.
