Following last week’s mêlée with Chris Brown at a local New York night club, Drake has decided to literally beef up his security. Flanked by two large looking bodyguards with their baby-sized black t-shirts stretched to the brink, Drake’s new hired bodyguards were constantly on the lookout for trouble while Drake hit up some local D.C shops.
At one point, a cameraman asked the rapper if he was concerned about his image following the Chris Brown fight in NYC … to which Drake casually replied, “My image is good, man.” A word of wisdom to Drake: “BRAINS BEFORE BRAWN.” Research and preparation aimed at identifying potential threats and contingency plans supersedes the need for big bouncer like buddyguards.
I’m not sure if this more comical or tragic….only a matter of time before toughie and toughie jr. get him into more trouble.
Being fairly new to the industry, and working in Los Angeles, it’s kind of difficult to not be frustrated with the industry when this is all a lot of clients seem to hire. I have more certifications, clearances, and training than most Dig Pro CPO’s and getting work on a regular basis is frustrating at best!
These 2 have been with D for at least a year now. I met them a at the BET Awards last year and on other occasions as well. BRAWN, yes….BRAINS, I’m sure we all have our opinions on that. I definitely know mine. I’ll be at BET again this year so will D and CB. My head will be on a swivel!
Hucky: That’s not how that realm of entertainers think.. At all trust me I spent 2 yrs as the head of security for Drakes Boss and I know Drake well and there is a reason I no longer work in that area of the business!!! They really think big is better!!! I believe bigger is better in the pay check that is!!!
Hey Nick, the term buddyguard has been around for a while. I first heard it about five years ago on a website called Tactical Forums. The tag is usually associated with individuals that are performing EP work in the entertainment industry.

He has buddyguards. Look at those dudes im sorry they scream im the whip ur a** bouncer untrained type. This is where people get protection wrong. Just because you hired a big muscle type doesnt mean you have made your protection better smh
IMO, this client has increased his threat level by choosing this type of security. While It IS possible that one or all of these operators is trained and fully qualified to provide effective service,
I would never accept a contract that would allow this type of visible public image… so I have to believe that these are likely either untrained people or they have physical training but the wrong mindset.
The client is more likely to be killed, injured or at the very least, embarrassed by involvement in a lawsuit caused by his “protective” detail. Always remember, that while the prospective client is interviewing you… you are likewise interviewing the client.
My favorite part of those pictures is the phone use by his “detail”….pretty much says it all.
This is so true…. but all this celebrities have no clue in what they are doing… they love to hire this beefed up men just for the look of toughness. I have done armed and unarmed executive protection and i have take down the biggest person with out touching. Im only 5’8″ but now how to always be aware and prepared. One day they will learn.
I like the term, “Buddyguard”.I hadn’t heard it before, I think it’s very descriptive.
