Industry experts are invited to share their experiences and training tips for new Executive Protection agents. The industry has evolved and veteran agents are faced with major transitions since they initially started.

Executive Director Jerry Heying emphasizes the importance of advance work as the most important skill to be developed for a successful and distinct career; they also highlight that professionalism is what makes or breaks a good Executive Protection agent.

Agents must work hard to avoid the problem and anticipate difficulties prior to those issues arise. The vast spectrum of backgrounds and experiences as to where our agents come from has a great effect to how an agent will handle each situation and client.

Military experience is a valuable asset to have but a successful bodyguard seeks training from reputable schools that will teach not only theoretical and practical skills, but they will also provide resources to their students but teaching them networking techniques to ensure that they get hired.

Bob Oatman is a pioneer in Executive Protection. In his vast career he has served as Chief of Detectives in Maryland’s Baltimore Country Police department. His experience and training  evolves around criminal justice and investigations, crisis management leadership, and executive protection.

His achievements include the formation and supervision of the first Hostage Negotiation Team; Bob Oatman thrives in the private sector, both nationally and internationally as a consultant in management services, expert protective and investigative support.

Training is another area where Oatman specializes in and what makes his program different than everybody else’s is he feels that “the success or the failure of any given projects depends on getting it right the first time”.

He took a year and half to plan his program to make sure his has created a solid foundation in collaboration with other practitioners in the field and used their expertise as a guide for his Executive Protection training. He has invited both law enforcement officers, as well as private corporation Protective Agents, to provide critique and feedback to better their program to offer the best possible training to the new agents.

In this interview Oatman highlights the importance of mentorship in the Executive Protection industry and why it is essential to surround oneself with bright individuals that you can use as assets to one’s career.

He also highlights the importance of advance work, counter-surveillance, and the strive to break away from the term “bodyguard” as it has been the stereotypical concept behind new and experienced Executive Protection agents. Oatman explains that “shooting for the stars” concept being a noble goal but a successful executive protection agent’s expectations of himself has to reflect reality.

He emphasizes that advance work and research begins with the career selection, training institution, resume, and follows an agent’s career throughout.

Charles (Chuck) Mauldin subject matter expert talks about the art of the advance work the most important aspect of an agent’s work. Advance work is a deal breaker and shows an agent’s skills and training at work.

Mauldin defines Advance Work as doing the specified thing, meeting with people, go through lists, and acquire as much experience as possible both in the theoretical direction as well as the practical aspect and emphasizes how different individuals have different skills of delivering the results. In his own words:

“How you got there is not important;” what is important is to make sure you have covered all aspect s of the advance work, have all the answers that you need, and the old saying: leave no stone unturned comes to play here.

An Executive Protection agent should anticipate all possible questions that may come up and be able to offer a solution to each one by being up to date with technology and the environmental changes (in the client’s environment) that may affect your work.

Mauldin identifies four elements to a successful and thorough advance work: time, extra personnel, tools available to your disposal, and money depending on the budget provided by the client or the company. Clearly defined objectives and goals is another key ingredient to the success of the advance work, and understand who your client is, and what you need to accomplish on each trip. Finally, tailor your meetings to who you are meeting with and what possible problems you are trying to determine when you meet with those contacts.

Harlan (Hucky) Austin speaks about Executive Protection and the importance of building a solid training foundation to ensure success. Success can be assured by setting clear goals about what your career objectives before entering the industry and take a realistic look at your skills prior to entering the field.

Top mistake as Hucky remembers it was the misunderstanding as to what the industry is about no matter how beautified it appears. An agent has to understand that the majority of the time (s) he works alone and there is not much interaction with the actual principle. The agent’s work evolves primarily in doing the advance work to prevent issues, as well as anticipate and prevent problems before or as they appear.

Hucky highlights that the Executive Protection is a very competitive industry and an agent has to make himself stand out from the crowd to increase his/her chances of getting hired. Hucky cautions individuals to change one’s mentality of entitlement of getting hired. It is important to provide a detailed introduction about one’s self and skills, as well developing excellent communication and networking skills to make yourself marketable.
