GOALS
Great things are not accomplished in the executive protection trade by impulse, or accident. But by a series of short, medium and long term goals. Be specific with your goals, break them down into small tasks as much as you can and set goals for the day, week, month and year. Having meaningful executive protection goals prevents you from spinning your wheels and going nowhere. But, remember you have to visualize the success of accomplishing these daily.
READING
Be a hungry reader and devour anything you can get your hands on in the executive protection trade from any writing medium (books, magazines, eBooks, Internet, etc.). This means less TV but the knowledge you gain from the investment will be well worth it. Just as we must eat to nourish our bodies, we must feed our minds by reading.
HIGH STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
Highly successful bodyguards are successful because they do a superior Job. When starting out, they attended the best executive protection academies and had mentors that took the necessary time to develop their skill. They knew what it took to make it the executive protection business. They have the ruthless to do their best in the industry. Successful bodyguards know they are only as good as their last assignment. They maintain a high stand of excellence because their livelihood and reputation depends on it. They know that a few slip-ups could lead to being replaced by up-and-coming young guns in the industry. Second-rate executive protection standards will never occur on their watch.
OPERATIONAL STANDARDS
When all is said and done it’s the protection of clientele that’s counts. This means superior advance work that gives the executive protection team the high confidence and good judgment it needs based on the quality of information provided by the advance man. Competent bodyguards think through every single aspect of what you do. This intelligence gives them the necessary foresight to anticipate and apply counter measures to effectively negate risks, vulnerabilities or threats towards the client in a professional manner. Continue with your hard word, bootstrapped endurance, and the drive and you will surely succeed. Keep safe and God speed.

Another great piece of advice. I especially found where you mentioned reading and maintaining a high standard of excellence to be what will probably separate slackers from true professionals. I think one more thing that’s very important is continuing education via schools pertaining to the profession as well. Once again great article Doc! Thanks for posting.
P. S. Doc, where can I find your book?
