Protectees are magnets for stalkers and various emotionally disturbed persons (EDP). Years ago, one of my protectees would routinely receive love letters from an obviously emotionally disturbed woman who would regularly propose marriage to my protectee as well as request that my protectee announce their marriage to the Queen of England and a host of other notables. While it was a distraction from the norm, it was never a joke.

The volatility of some EDP’s was a constant reminder of what could become a very dangerous situation at any moment. What compounded the threat of this woman and others like her, was the awareness that identifying any pre-attack indicators would be very difficult since as a lone individual, the signatures would not be readily apparent.

When it comes to selecting a firearm; selecting a firearm is like selecting wine, taste is a matter of preference, within reason; as the mission should dictate the tools.  However here are a few variables that I feel one should consider.

The major considerations for most people when it comes to selecting a firearm, whether for self-defense or executive protection should be:
• Reliability
• Simplicity
• Accuracy
• Caliber

I receive hundreds of inquiries a week from individuals wanting to get into the Executive Protection Business. It’s amazing to me, how many misconceptions are out there about this industry.

So at the risk of bursting bubbles, I will tell you this: There are no short-cuts to getting started in this business. In short, be certain this is the line of work for you. Don’t try to do this job unless you find that you have a real zeal for it.

Books: This is your first assignment on this career path. I highly recommend, that you read up (research?) and get a basic understanding of some of the requirements and methodologies we use in this field. If it appeals to you I would suggest that you take the next steps; seek out training, mentoring, and networking.

If it doesn’t, you only wasted a few bucks. There are some great books out there by seasoned professionals in the industry. In addition, many EP schools have books and manuals that cover the basics.

Going on your first overseas bodyguard assignment, everyone asks themselves “How well will I do?”  The following will assist advance team and protective team members to gain an edge when going on a foreign assignment for the first time.

The serious bodyguard studies his or her area of operation (AO)  like other people read fiction novels or Hollywood gossip magazines. Obviously, the internet is the most immediate method of finding out about your overseas bodyguard AO. Don’t take the easy road and read only the glossy travel sections, tourist news or politically sanitized data about the country.
