You’ve got your first bodyguard assignment, congratulations. Now its time to use calm judgment and plan out the assignment with a focused mind so you can prepare properly. The more you plan ahead, the better possibility for success.  The overall objective of executive protection (EP) in the real world is to create a secure environment conducive to the business activities being carried out by the client within a particular area.

Main Objectives

Your main objectives should include:  preventing and addressing security threats that affect the client’s well-being, prioritizing core EP needs, identifying, assessing and controlling risks. This is accomplished by categorizing threats for risk management planning and execution of the EP operations. If threat groups are operating in the area:

•    Identify your enemy.

•    Their method of operation – likely techniques and tactics that may be used.

•    Their overall professionalism – are they sophisticated or armature’s.

•    Their recent Attacks – and possible pre-incident indicators.

•    Minimize these threats by advance work to develop a plan to avoid them.

•    Employ basic EP measures to deter and mitigate the threats.

•    Establish the appropriate EP plan, security controls and need to know procedures.

1. Showing up early within your area of operation is key to becoming more productive. These days advance work is being pushed aside and is not given the proper importance or time requirement needed. Showing up at least one day early on your own time will cost you a little additional expense. However, the rewards will be twin-fold in terms of getting your job accomplished. If you believe in the old saying that 80% of success is just showing up, than 90% is showing up early for your advance work assignments.

2. Obtaining the clients itinerary as early as possible. Once you obtained the itinerary go over it with a fine tooth comb. If there are agendas or meetings that you are not sure about, contact the meeting owner (the individuals who will be conducting the meeting or event). Talking personally with these individuals is worth its weight in gold. You’ll learn the fine details, get access to how the meeting or event will unfold. This all helps in the protection process and makes you more productive on the day of the event. You can brief your client on the specific movements within the venues, etc.

3. Obtaining VIP passes and parking as early as possible. When planning for a VIP event for your client, get you and your client’s passes as well as VIP parking well in advance. Never assume they will issue your VIP passes and parking on the day of the event, this could become disastrous. “Murry’s Law” may come into play. To become more productive, meet with the event manager in charge of VIP passes and parking well in advance and you’ll be squared-away.

4. Booking your client’s and your hotel room way in advance. Your room needs to be adjacent to the client’s room, with a fully booked hotel this little requirement could pose a major problem. Make your reservations in advance; speak with the manager of the rooms division of the hotel. If you use the particular hotel on a regular basis, develop a professional relationship with this person. Remember the hotel is considered the client’s home away from home, it’s their castle. The less hassles for you and the client while staying at the hotel the better, this can be accomplished by developing a good working relationship with the managers.

All bodyguards dream of obtaining high-profile clients, the following are some basic tips on how to position yourself to successfully retain these types of clients.

Do your research, check public records, newspapers and magazines about big name potential clients in your area or those who visit your area on a regular basis. Be in the right place at the right time by choice; position yourself in upscale restaurants and affluent bars where the wealthy and high-profile socialize. Cigar bars are popular spots for wealthy and high-profile individuals. Take mental notes, be quiet, look upscale and  confident in your appearance. Conduct detailed observation and analysis of:

1) How did the individual arrived at the restaurant, bar, cigar bar, etc.?

A) Taxi
B) Self driven
C) Chauffeur
D) Accompanied by bodyguard

If the individual took a taxi (answer A), than you know there are particular risks involved with taxis; threat of assault, robbery or even murder. If you observed that the individual had driven him or her self to the location (answer B) you know that individual has a higher risk for kidnapping or carjacking. It is doubtful that the person has anti-kidnapping driving skills or that the vehicle is armored. If the individual has been chauffeur driven (answer C), observe an analyze the chauffeur’s security skills in dropping off and picking up the individual. 2. Continuously learning. As a professional bodyguard you will be continuously obtaining special knowledge (expertise) from your formal training, on-the-job training and independent study (often at your own cost). You should never stop learning the trade.

The objective of this article is to help talented bodyguards’ problem-solve their money management activities and to reach their financial goals. As bodyguards we get paid sporadically at times.  The goal is to plan an effective budget and to accumulate enough funds to survive the slow times and eventually become self-sufficient. No one is coming to our financial rescue; we need to hang tough there is no other option.

This year serious bodyguards and elite executive protection specialists will make a lot more money in the industry than in previous years.  This is the best time to get the ball rolling and accomplish something important financially with your bodyguard career.  Money management takes three of the most unglamorous things to accomplish; planning, self-discipline and hard-work.  Practice them or perish:

1. Planning. Bodyguards should efficiently plan their time, energy and money into areas of the profession that offers the biggest payoffs.  Bodyguards should be constantly asking themselves on a daily basis: “What is the best use of my time and what BG projects will be most financially rewarding?” Focus on the most important projects and activities. You must start planning business and personal lifestyle changes to reduce your overhead. You goal at this stage of the game is to earn more and save more of what you earn.

2. Self-discipline. Unlike what you see on TV bodyguards should not live a lavish lifestyle, we are not rock stars. You don’t need the latest model car, drive a nondescript one instead, you don’t need that Rolex, a Timex will do for now. You don’t need to display a social status at this time; you need to start building a nice little nest egg for yourself.  It’s time to get focused and get your financial house in order. Cut all useless spending; stop or cutback on going out to the club for a round of drinks and start tighten up your spending habits.

3. Hard-work. Now it’s time to get focused and get your head into the game. Make your money management goals happen through hard-work and action. Take for example if a bodyguard goes on three well-paid BG assignments per month, that’s thirty-six assignments per year, saving $500 from each assignment adds up to a total savings of $18,000. You are now taking full responsibly of your money management. Your individual savings budget may fluctuate, save a much as you can.
