One Handed Shooting: An Executive Protection Tactical Must

Officer.com has an article by Steve Denney entitled “One-Handed Shooting; Another critical and neglected skill” with a very valid application to Executive Protection. One of the points Denney makes in his article is that sometimes you have to play the cards you’re dealt and if that means shooting with only one hand, so be it.

There’s plenty of situations in Executive Protection that shooting with one hand is a very real possibility, notably when you are trying to move your principal during an attack. In fact, you are far more likely to have to shoot with one hand in Executive Protection than most other situations.

If you are responsible for providing “body cover,” then instinctively you reach for your principal and start to move, if that’s an option. However, if you are on a small detail where there isn’t the option of leaving your principal to engage the threat, shooting while engaging and moving off the “X” with your principal in tow, might be your only choice. Like Steve Denney says the time to learn to shoot with one hand is not when the shooting starts.

EPI has been hosting networking gatherings for several years now and we encourage all those actively working in the field and those who would like to work in this exciting profession, to come and meet others.

Five Ways to Improve Your Executive Protection Business in Tough Financial Times

To make it through rough financial times we as executive protection businessmen and women need to readjust our EP outlook with serious and committed new strategies. Don’t let worry weigh you down, get out and start building your business with these EP business tips.

1. Business of service. First and foremost we are in the customer service business and should develop a customer service attitude by placing the client first. Show your clients and prospects that they are respected, valued and are significant, that through your service and devotion you will keep them and their families safe by always acting in their best interest. When you focus on what’s right for the client and they see you are bound by a high code of ethics and customer service they will have no doubt in their minds to hire you.

2. Keep focused. Keep your mind focused, positive and strong, don’t run from tough financial times; use it as positive energy to keep goal-oriented each day and to increase your self-discipline in taking efficient action for retaining your current EP clients and attracting new ones. With the clients you do have try to increase the EP assignment volume. Let them know that you are not working only for a paycheck; you’re working because you love to do what you do.

3. Be cost-effective. Run a leaner, more cost-effective and efficient EP business; eliminate all clutter. Start conserving your cash, monitoring your cash flow, ensuring your EP business expenses and your lifestyle are in line with your accounts receivable. It should be your decision to be resilient and overcome any finical adversity in a cost-managed way.

Bodyguard Salary Negotiations

Setting a salary goal is an important factor when entering into the Bodyguard industry; analyze how much money you require per year and know what the current salary range is for the Bodyguard position you are interviewing for.

Your military, law enforcement, personal security detachment or private sector   background experience and strength that you bring to the Bodyguard position will be a great factor in your salary negotiation. Your strengths should include providing consistent thoughtful Bodyguard effort; this way you’ll be paid good money for the value you provide.

You have invested Bodyguard training and have hard-earned Bodyguard experience, now you should start preparing for a great salary from your Bodyguard career. The best scenario would be that you get your asking price or more (benefits, medical, vacation, etc.). Some questions the interviewer may ask in regards to compensation include:

•    What salary are you looking for in the job at (insert company name)?

•    What package are you looking for in the job at (insert company name)?

Most of the time Bodyguard positions are a fixed package and not open to salary negotiations.  However, if the position is open to salary negotiations here are some recommendations:

Never attempt salary negotiations before they actually offer you the position. Stay away from talking about the BG salary package until as late in the hiring process as possible.

When it is time to bring up your BG salary expectations know the smallest salary package that you are willing to accept and a perfect, maximum amount you’d be happy to accept. Do not give out the figures you have in mind.  Make sure the interviewer provides the salary figure first, before you start negotiations.

Assessing Publicly Available Information and Executive Protection Implications

In a recent Rand study entitled Freedom and Information: Assessing Publicly Available Data Regarding U.S. Transportation Infrastructure Security, Rand researchers examined how publicly available data could be exploited by a terrorists to plan and conduct  terrorist attacks.

Using a “red-team”, the researchers conceptualized a series of notional terrorist attacks using the publicly available information to plan their attacks. The research revealed two major findings. First,red-team members were able to identify
information that, with some exceptions, proved useful for planning terrorist attacks (based on six different notional attack scenarios). Second,  publicly available information which might be useful to a potential terrorist varied
across information categories.

Detailed information about specific security procedures for the targets selected by the red-team was
the most difficult to find whereas general non specific information was readily available.
