Writing Cover Letters That Get Your Resume Read First

Writing cover letters that target the requirements of the job and demonstrate a healthy understanding of the organization and industry you want to work in will greatly increase your prospects of obtaining an interview. So how do you go about writing cover letters that get your resume read first?

Your cover letter creates the first impression of you and can influence the way a potential employer views your application. Writing cover letters that grab the reader’s interest and encourage a careful reading of your resume must therefore be considered as important as writing an effective resume.

Do not send generic cover letters with your resume if you want to be considered seriously for a position. Each cover letter must be individually targeted to each position and if necessary, your resume should also be adjusted to suit. Your cover letter should be well written and free of errors if you hope to gain an interview.

However, if you are not confident that you are able to write an effective cover letter, there are templates for writing cover letters freely available for download from the internet. Cover letter templates simply provide an outline of what you must include in your cover letter and even provide you with an order.

For some people, this saves a great deal of anxiety and they can focus on the more important issues of content. Once you have completed a first draft using a template, you are free to personalize your cover letter and reveal your personality if you wish.

A typical cover letter template will guide you to include all the necessary contact information, the employer’s contact information, and direct you paragraph by paragraph to include all the necessary elements of a good cover letter.

You can add more to the cover letter than is suggested if you feel it is necessary, however, cover letters should be relatively short. They should be no longer than two pages at the most, but ideally one page of three to four paragraphs is what you should aim for.

Remember when writing cover letters that they should be short, concise and to the point. Do not include anything that is not directly relevant to your application. Make it as easy as possible for a potential employer to see that you fulfill all the specifications for the job.

Your cover letter is meant to both inform and influence. In a sense, writing cover letters that are effective and interesting will predispose potential employers in your favor and they will read your resume more proactively and positively than otherwise.

Modern day technology has improved self defense weaponry almost to the level of a science fiction movie. In fact, from what I saw recently on the Discovery Channel, anything you’ve seen in Star Wars isn’t too far behind, if it isn’t here already. Long gone are the days when, as you are snuggling up in bed, you suddenly hear a strange noise downstairs. Reluctantly, you grab your nine-iron from your golf bag, and slowly creep around, hoping to find that it was the cat, or at least that whoever it was is already gone.

These days, keep your clubs in the bag. There is a much better, and safer, solution. Tonight you can reach for your Taser, securely sneak downstairs in hopes of surprising Mr. Badguy, zap him, and call 9-1-1. From about 15 feet away, no less. This is a very real, much safer, possibility, thanks to the Taser.

I am often asked which my weapon of choice for self defense is. Frankly, I prefer a shotgun in my home, and a handgun away. That has much to do with my training and experience, however.   Many people’s idea of networking relates to the ‘size of their Christmas Card List, rather than the quality of their relationship with each person on that list. Similarly those people network, but few reap the rewards of zeroing in on their potential.  Here are some ideas to help fill the gap between where you are now and where you can be.Â

1 Be Generous – Give without expectations and you will be surprised at how it returns to you. It may not come from the same source but a new client, referral, or opportunity will show up because of your efforts.

3 Gift your contact – Imagine you are buying your contact a gift for their work – what might it be? Understanding what your contact is looking for is the key to developing rapport and mutual understanding.

4 Get Involved – Getting involved puts you in a consistent position of visibility. It allows you to retain ‘Top of Consciousness’ positioning and when people need someone your name will spring to mind.

5 Be a Powerful Resource & Facilitator for Others- Expand your network and facilitate for others. Use your networking resources to bridge people you know with others. What goes around comes around.

6 Learn the Needs of Others then Help Fill Those Needs – Can your business fill their needs? Who do you know who can? Either way you have a win/win situation.

7 Building relationships – is more important than collecting lots of leads. Think quality vs. quantity. Connect deeper vs. on the surface.

8 It’s More Important to Receive Business Cards than Hand Them Out – This puts you in a position to be able to follow up.

9 Consistently Follow Up – It’s not enough to have a network. Follow up and continue developing your relationships and network. Have a good reason to follow up and ask “How can I help you?”

10 Develop Evangelists – Build relationships with Centres of Influence who connect with your ideal client or customer. Offer support and information exchange in return for referrals.

11 Be Connected – The 6 Degrees of Separation Theory states that we are only 6 people away from finding anybody we need to know. Be curious and you will be surprised at what people, resources, and information are at your finger-tips.

12 Develop You – You can grow your career or business as big as you can grow yourself. Start here!
