Supportive advice can have a powerful impact on those who embrace and incorporate it in their life goals. So many individuals are given great advice and so often do nothing with it.

Recently I offered some knowledge to an individual who was inquiring about the Executive Protection industry. Not only did I provide him with my personal knowledge, I supplied him with the necessary steps he should take in order to get his foot in the door and succeed in the industry.

This individual was one of the few who actually listened and absorbed the information and principles I provided to him. He utilized this information to begin working towards his goals within the Executive Protection industry and was successful in his mission. This knowledge and advice so willingly offered has given this individual an entirely different perspective and has opened doors he never knew existed.

“Sexton Executive Security is seeking females experienced in HE operations to be part of an upcoming Executive/Close Protection training class which will receive National and possibly International media attention.  We have been contacted by a media source requesting permission to do a story on the advantages that females with overseas experience have when returning from combat and entering the private sector.  As a result, we have retained a professional PR consultant who will coordinate the publicity side with television, magazine and newspaper correspondents.

Japanese Pop Singer Assaulted

In The News

Japanese pop sensation Hideki Kaji, a founding member of the critically acclaimed band “Bridge” was assaulted in Stockholm Sweden while shooting a music video in support of his new album.

Kaji had just finished shooting a scene when a break was called by the director of the film crew.  Kaji volunteered to stay with the equipment and shortly their after was confronted by a group of three men who assaulted Kaji leaving him with a cut lip and the loss of a dental implant.  In addition to being physically hurt the three attackers made off with over $2,500 USD worth of high end camera and recording equipment.

Stockholm police spokesman Bo Paulson stated there are currently no suspects from the assault against Kaji.  Additional reports on the attack state that neither Kaji nor his crew had hired any security or executive protection specialist while he was on location for the video shoot.
In addition to working with the band Bridge, Kaji has recorded 10 solo albums as well as recording with Saint Etienne singer Sarah Caracknell.

A relative newcomer to the business, Dupas is doing everything right to move forward in her pursuit of a long-term, successful Executive Protection career. Her determination and focus is inspiring and serves as a fine example of the kind of self-motivation required to succeed in what is a challenging field. She shares with us how her military and security background has served as a foundation for her career pursuit and what it is to be a female in a male-dominated profession.

BGC: How did you get your start in Executive Protection?

LDD: I have friends who work in security and they would ask me if I ever thought about being in corporate security. I think it was because my demeanor is very matter-of-fact, and straight-forward, and my skill set lends itself to Executive Protection.

My background is working with at-risk youth as both a counselor and an educator, which requires the ability to be an effective communicator; often negotiating or diffusing potentially violent situations. I also have a military background. I’ve always been a self-starter and law enforcement didn’t feel like the right fit. I started to do some research online and wrote letters to key people in the EP business.

Tips For Job Hunting During A Recession

We are fortunate in the executive protection field; crime doesn’t stop when the economy is in recession. Unfortunately, crime can actually increase. Jobs in the security field such as international security experts, police officers, private security guards, theft prevention specialists and even detectives are in high demand.

If you are a job-seeker, this time can be somewhat challenging, especially if you don’t have a lot of experience or training. Here are some tips to help Job Seekers during these trying times.

1. The Job Search is Your Job

Establish some sort of a routine for your search; start at a certain time every day to begin your work and have a game plan. Set a specific number of places to send materials every day or every week and plan on spending a specific amount of time every day devoted to the search. Plan to spend at least the amount of time you would spend working a part-time job at the task of finding employment (4 hours).

2.  Success is in the Details

Treat every single job opening you apply for as a unique circumstance. Don’t use a template cover letter. Write your own or have a professional assist you. Each letter should have one paragraph that addresses the specific position and skills the company is seeking. Make sure materials are clean, neat, and free from typos or grammatical errors. Nothing will eliminate you from the talent pool faster than a poorly written cover letter. Revamp your materials during these difficult times so you can be competitive. Use good paper. Send thank you notes after interviews and always, always be nice to the receptionist at the front desk!

3. Keep Accurate Records

Keep records of every resume you send, to whom, and the date. This will serve as your guide later to follow up with employers. You’d be surprised how many people just send out resumes all over the place and never follow up. Take note of the job title, specific skills or experience they’ve asked for, the H.R. person to whom you’ve sent your materials, and the date that you’ve sent it. Follow up within 3-5 days with a brief letter or e-mail or telephone call confirming that your materials have been received. Also, keep those notes handy, so that if you receive a call (or make a follow-up call) you can refer to your notes to better discuss the job, the company, and other important details. That phone call is important; it is an easy opportunity for the H.R. person to pre-screen so they make good use of their time when scheduling interviews.

4. Communicate With Colleagues & Your Network

A lot of individuals get depressed when they cannot find work, and tend to pull away from friends and even become isolated. Don’t let your pride get in the way-tell your colleagues in the business that you’re looking for work-and need their help. Just getting out and socializing is good for your morale, and you will be able to hear about potential opportunities. Ask if your colleagues could arrange for an informational interview with their employer. This is an interview where you’re not being considered for a specific job; you just would like to learn more about the company and more about what job skills you need in order to be considered for future employment.

5.  Educate Yourself

Just because you’re not working doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities for you to advance in your career. Maybe this is the perfect time for you to take a temp job or part-time job working undercover surveillance at a department store or working the guardhouse for a gated community, while also doing coursework to enhance your EPS skills. Be sure to do your homework as to reputable training programs. If it looks to good to be true; it probably is.

Above all, stay positive and motivated, with your eye on the prize. Remember, these hard times are not going to last forever.

There are all kinds of lawyers, but if you’ve just been involved in a work-related shooting, you wouldn’t choose one who specialized in corporate tax. Similarly, guys my age don’t go to pediatricians when they need their cholesterol medicine renewed. So; which is the best protection school for you?

If we can agree that all protection clients are different, then we can begin to understand why some schools might prepare a new protection specialist for their career path, better than others.  Through the years we noticed that the individuals who signed up for our classes, generally came from the law enforcement or military ranks. However, when asked about their career aspirations, they often said they wanted to land assignments in corporate security or the entertainment industry.
